The $100 Random Acts of Kindness experiment was awesome.
I had to sit pretty far from the register, so I could only SEE reactions. That’s no problem because no words were needed. There were many smiles, hoots, and laughs as people received their free coffee or pastry.
I kept looking at the floor to not be the obvious “giver”–when I did I saw springier footsteps than when they arrived.
One conversation unraveled at the table next to me. A guy came in and sat down with his coffee. A few minutes later his girlfriend joined. It sounded like this:
Girl: “Oh my gosh, I love free coffee.”
Guy: “What do you mean?”
“C’mon, your coffee was free too, right?”
“Nope.”
“Liar.”
“Seriously, what’s the free coffee about?”
“I don’t know why it was free. I asked the guy and he wouldn’t tell me. He said to consider it the fun fairy.”
“That’s pretty cool.”
“Real cool.”
“We should do that for someone else and see what they do.”
The guy’s coffee wasn’t free because he got another barista who wasn’t in on the deal. Ha ha.
Another guy walked around the coffee shop making eye contact with every table. He was trying to figure out who did it. It was fun to watch how it changed the course of each recipient’s day.
