In May, Barbara Dewes generously donated to the Tahoe Safe Alliance in order to support tutoring program for high school students. Tahoe SAFE Alliance is a community-based organization providing direct services to victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other individuals in crisis. Incorporated as an independent non-profit, 501(c)3 public benefit corporation in 1985, the agency maintains four office sites, one shelter and has 22 staff members and 2 AmeriCorps Volunteers. Tahoe SAFE Alliance believes that every person has the right to live a life free of violence. The agency works to empower victims in reclaiming those rights by providing safety, advocacy, support, and education. Tahoe SAFE Alliance is currently the only agency providing assistance to victims of intimate partner violence and sexual assault in the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee region of California and Nevada and owns/operates the only safe house in the community. All services are free of charge and provided in both English and Spanish.
In 2011, Tahoe SAFE Alliance accomplished many great things including:
- Provided Direct services to 780 women, man, teens, and children
- 9 women and 14 children received emergency shelter in our Mountain Rose Safe House
- Received 508 calls on our 24-hour Community Helpline
- Provided 98 children with individual and group counseling
- Gave 452 violence prevention presentations to 4,756 kids, teens, and adults
- 199 students participated in 22 boys and girls youth empowerment groups
